OCRText | We dedicate all our work to Socorro’s best This yearbook is being dedicated to a very special teacher who has been part of the faculty at Socorro for the past five years. This special person is Mr. Josephus Heavens. After graduating from Brighton High School, he went to Tuskegee Institute for two years, where he completed his advanced R.O.T.C. He then dedicated 27% years to service of his country in the country in the U.S. Army. After retirement from the mili- tary he earned a B.S. degree in education from U.T. El Paso, where he majored in Mathematics and holds a minor in English. Since coming to Socorro, Mr. Heavens has shown himself to be one of a rare breed of teacher who truly cares about his students above all else. He arrives on campus each morning to dedicate those early hours to helping students under- stand all the intricacies of Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry. He spends his lunch hour with mem- bers of the Math Club, preparing them for UIL competition and, again, tutoring any student who is having difficulty in any subject area. After school he works from four to five to help students improve their grades. Mr. Heavens doesn’t just tutor outside of class. In the classroom he devotes endless hours to explain- ing, over and over if necessary, the various mathematic concepts need- ed in class. His patience seems un- limited when it comes to sharing his knowledge. And finally, we dedicate this book to Mr. Heavens because he isn’t just concerned about academic performance. He supports our ath- letic teams, our clubs, our publica- tions, our school image and our pride. Mr. Heavens IS Socorro High, and we love him. 83 Dedication |
