| OCRText | Old El Paso celebrates 400 years Four Centuries ago in 1536, El Paso del Norte, or the Pass to the North, was founded by a Spaniard named Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca. El Paso was so named be- cause of a natural pass in the mountains. In 1632 the first settle- ment was established at the Pass to the North. El Paso was incor- porated as a city in 1873. El Paso’s population increased rapidly from 300 in 1853 to our present 425,259. 6 4 Centuries ’81 Since 1873 El Paso has grown into a large and beautiful city. Each year El Paso spreads further around the base of the Franklin Mountains, one of El Paso’s most attractive features. The Franklins stand out as a purplish monument against our red and golden South- western sunsets. Our city will con- tinue its amazing growth, spread- ing ever further throughout the re- mainder of the Greater Southwest. |
