OCRText | 1981-1982 | 1979-80 1978-79 1975-16 1972-73 Socorro Independent School District serves an area of 146 square miles in El Paso County. It is one of the fastest growing school districts in the county, tripling its school population since 1970. The average pop- ulation growth has increased from 12 to 14 per cent per year in the last 10 years. This year, according to Pat Downer, SISD. superintendent, the district employed 250 fac- ulty members to teach the 4,319 students enrolled in the four schools --- the high school, junior high, intermediate and elementary school. The district has seen new growth in buildings as well. The addition of 18 classrooms to the high school and 14 to the junior high campus were com- pleted in 1979. And new schools are being planned. Construction of anew elemen- tary school and an administra- tion building began in October on Rio Vista Road. Mr. Downer anticipates that by 1990, 10 years from now, the district will have a minimum of two high schools, four elemen- tary schools and two junior high schools. 4. Mr. Downer points to the map to show the growth of the district. 2. Due to the increased student popu- lation, student parking was located along the side of the tennis courts. 3. Assistant Principal Tom Marcee works with the school computer. 4. A barometer illustrates the popula- tion growth of the district from 1972 to 1980, and projects it through 1982. 5. Mr. Inocente Quintanilla, left, junior high school principal, talks with Mr. Eu- gene Jones, SHS principal, and Mr. Jim Trimble, assistant superintendent for the district. 6. Students observe the construction of the elementary school on Rio Vista Road. 7. Eighteen classrooms were added to the high school, making it bigger and better. opening 9 |
